Hello - great script. I've installed the latest version to help avoid the guestbook spam. The spam has all but disappeared. However, occasionally, one gets through. Does this mean that some of the spammers actually enter their junk manually? Thank you.

Response:   Spam can be added in loads of different ways so there is no 100% successful way to block it.
Brian
I have nearly solved my issues re: people spamming my guestbook on a daily basis. What I did was go in the control panel under standard preferences and I blocked the following words that I "rather your guest did not use": pharmacy premarin zoloft zyrtec phentrmine cephalexin zoloft albuterol zocor zithromax pregnancy levitra hydrocodone dosage acne

That has greatly reduced the spam in my guestbook! I thought I would share this for the other users of this script in hopes others will benefit.

Do I have to change any of this in the code?

$use_absolute_reference = "no";
$urladdress = "http://www.active-scripts.net/cgi-bin/guestb/guestbook.cgi";
$font = "";
$guestbookroot = "$ENV{'HTTP_HOST'}";

Response:   Your guestbook will almost certainly work without changing this code.
Ruth
Is there any way to change the main page title, the one that shows up at the top of the browser window? Currently it just says "Active Guestbook". I can't find it any where in the control panel.
Thanks for your time (url http://noblescarlet.co.uk/cgi-bin/guestbook/guestbook.cgi)

Response:   You change this in the Standard Preferences Manager.

Hope someone can help me. I have uploaded the script which is excellent. All working fine straight away.

Trying to add it into my frame set. How do I do that? Got a simple 2 frame - top and bottom all centred. Want to put the guestbook in the second frame.

Greatful for help.

Is it possible to password protect my guestbook cgi script so that only authorized people can view the guestbook?
28 May 2005

Response:   Not at the moment but we may look at adding this in the future.

I want to upgrade to the new version. I'm using version 5.15 I think right now. I have installed the first script back in 2002 and have about 134 messeges that I can not afford to lose. If I install over will I lose any info at all?
28 May 2005

Response:   99.9% of people will not lose anything. Even if you do, everything can be easily found again. Just let us know if you have a problem.
Kim
just to say thanks.
your latest versions have defeated the spam people - well done

Hi,
i'm using your guestbook script here:
http://www.maryannhoberman.com/cgi/guestbook/guestbook.cgi
and as of May 12 it suddenly stopped adding new messages, i don't understand why. can you help, please?
Thanks.
24 May 2005

Response:   If the guestbook is working but you can't add new messages, this is almost ALWAYS due to the fact that you have run out of web space.

Have updated to 8.1. When message is submitted, instead of returning to guestbook page (b9 left blank). I get a server error message. returning to a refreshed guestbook page shows the message added to the guestbook but I keep getting this server error message. Any ideas
20 May 2005

Response:   Upload in ascii instead of binary.

Hi,
I want to upgrade from Active Guestbook 5-3 to 8-1d.
I downloaded it and uploaded it over the old one - it confirmed something like it was successfully installed etc. and something about settings being backed up.
But now, when I go to the guestbook, all I have is as if I had just installed it for the first time.
I have gone to control panel to look for backups and to try to restore User Settings, but it says there are none available. Have I done something wrong?

Response:   Please email us at support@active-scripts.net with the address of the guestbook and the ftp address, username and password.

Hi,

I just installed the new version of your guestbook due to alot of spam. How do I make the link clickable in their emails, the one that they need to click after they sign? I did a test and the link in my email started with www, so I had to copy and paste it into another browser.

Or how do I just disable that? But leave the rest the same?

Thanks

Response:   I think it depends on which email client you are using. Please email support@active-scripts.net with your email address.
Naomi
Hi there. I just tried to post a link to my guestbook here but it won't allow it because it says URLs are currently blocked. What e-mail address should I send the info to?

I have left my e-mail address with this post so you can contact me that way if you like.

Many thanks, Naomi

Response:   You need to send the information to support@active-scripts.net

Firstly, thank you so much for an excellent guestbook script. The best available I believe.
Secondly. Like the smileys I get with my email, is it possible for guests to submit "smileys" in my guestbook :)
13 May 2005

Response:   Smileys have now been added.
Naomi
I am having trouble with setting the header code. When I go to the Standard Preferences Manager and select 'yes' to 'Use your own html header at the top of the guestbook', in the header text area is a single letter - 'q'. I delete that and paste my header code, but when I go to save changes the 'q' remains and the code for my header that I put in is lost. What could be wrong?

Response:   Email us with the address of the guestbook.

first off i want to say that i love this script - thank you so much!!

my question involves approving messages in the message manager. it works great if i only want to approve one message, but if i have 2 or messages to approve i experience the following problem: after clicking "approve this message" on the first message, the other messages that need approval disappear. the only way to get them back is to go back to the control panel and back to the message manager, then i can see them.

is there a way to approve them all at once without going back and forth between pages??
12 May 2005

Response:   When you approve a message, the script will take you to the next message, so you need to approve messages from the top down (i.e. the most recent first) rather than the bottom up. You can still use the menu to navigate back and forward so you should't need to go back to the control panel.
Chris
Is there a way to spell check messages entered in the message board?
11 May 2005

Response:   Afraid not.
Greg
Is it permitted to modify your guestbook and use the modifications on one not-for-profit site, as long as you keep the modifications strictly private? I am looking for a way to integrate a guestbook, a program to send email to me, and a couple of mailing lists. I might be willing to pay someone else to make the changes for me, but if I make the changes myself for my own private use, I don't think I should have to pay for that.
4 May 2005

Response:   You can obviously edit the script for your own use, but there will be no support for this.
Levan
how can I change the with of maim table (and ) - I want to insert the guesbook in IFRAME and it is wider than I need - I tried to change it from guesbook.cgi but it's still 600px-width. please help
27 April 2005

Response:   Editing the script won't make any difference. You change the width in the Standard Preferences Manager
eh
hi there, I've been using your active guestbook and newsboard scripts and am absolutely loving them! I'm currently testing out the active Powerbook script to further customize them. What I'm wondering is whether there is a way of taking the existing newsboard I have and applying the powerbook preferences to it. Is there a way of transferring over all the entries i've made over to powerbook or do I have to start all over? Any help would greatly be appreciated.

Thanks,
26 April 2005

Response:   There is no way to import from newsboard, only from the guestbook.
