This is probably a stupid question as it doesn’t seem to have been raised before – but if one sets the same background colour for every component in the Guestbook to establish a complete page of a single colour, is there any way of restricting that background to the working page itself? And thus to stop it spreading across the entire screen? Thanks

Response:   Please email support@active-scripts.net so that we can get more details of what you want.

I searched the questions here and found one that answered my question.but doesn't work. I have a javascript menu I placed as described in the CSS area of the Standard Preferences panel (outside the style tags). I was careful to get the correct directory level for the src tag of the scripts, yet the menu still will not appear.

Response:   Sometimes javascript needs to be in the body of the html rather than the head. Try adding the code to the header or footer html via the Standard Preferences Manager.

I am using your free guestbook, which has enhanced various websites that I have designed, but have a question. A client of mine is closing down his old company but starting up another. Rather than setting up a new guestbook and losing all the previous comments, how do I simply transfer the guestbook file from one site to the other?
19 April 2005

Response:   Set up a new guestbook on the new site. Then copy the contents of the old active_guestbook_files directory across to the new site.

Just to let everyone know that this is the best free guestbook anyone could ask for.

Support is one of the best I have come across, very quick response and friendly.

How do I enlarge vertically the box for adding a question? This program loaded easily and quickly with no errors. A real pleasure!
16 April 2005

Response:   This will be in version 8 which is just about to be released.

This is a comment.

I would like to tell everyone that ActiveGuestbook runs seemlessly on my WinXP Pro with Apache 2 0 53 and ActivePerl 5 8!

Thanks!

I'm a happy user of both Active Guestbook and Active PowerBook. In Active PowerBook on the add message page, if the fields are left blank, when you press "continue" you go to a page with a link that says: "Please fill in all required fields." When you click the link, it goes to a page: "cgi-bin/myfolder/none"
which does not exist. How do I redirect this back to the Add Message page?
2 April 2005

Response:   This was a bug, now fixed.

Guestbook:
I have active guestbook, and I am getting the same problem that I had with other guestbooks:

that is: companies are going into all my guestbooks and putting 'BS' messages in there saying 'nice site!' just so that they can advertise their website.

how can I prevent this intrusion?

thanks

Hi. Employees at my job are each allowed a public_html section for personal sites on the server at work. I FTP'ed the guestbook.cgi file (as ascii) to my cgi-bin, and set the guestbook directory to 777, and the guestbook.cgi to 755 (as the readme file instructs).

When I go thru my browser to run guestbook.cgi?action=setup, I get a 403 Forbidden error. "You don't have permission to access (directory) on this server". I experimented with different permission settings, but keep getting the same error.

I'm very new to running cgi scripts. Is there something obvious I might be missing? Thanks.
1 April 2005

Response:   Have you tried 755 on the directory?
Hugh
It looks like someone has created a script to spam every Active Script Guestbook. It there a way to have real users use a real time created password, (the way domain registrars operate), so only real people can post to your guest book?

I'm getting spam everyday. The spammers keep using different IP addresses! Thanks
27 March 2005

Response:   The latest version blocks this spam and requires an automatically generated passcode.
Kim
like the new version very much thanks.
just one point the action delete_all seems a little dangerous. if someone knew the command isnt there a risk they could type the command in the browser and delete your guestbook?
23 March 2005

Response:   It's safe. It only works if you are logged in to the Control Panel.

COMMENT ONLY.

I had a problem with the new 7.8e and posted a question here. The guys (or girls?) emailed me within about 1/2 hour with some suggestions. One worked - the FTP prog was set at auto and has transmitted CGI files in ASCII before. Not this time, I had to set it to ASCII.

The GB then worked first time.

Excellent customer relations folks. Many a firm out there would be envious of how good you are to us mere mortals.

Good work & thanks for your time.

I'm using v7.8 on my web site, but I can't get it to bypass the Preview Screen, even if I use the control panel to change to radio button. Everything else will hold the change except that one option.
20 March 2005

Response:   Download the latest version (7.8b) from the site. It fixes this.
David
Is there a way to disable the "filename.cgi?action=add" that I do not want anyone to sign the gbook anymore??
18 March 2005

Response:   If you go through the script and find the line
"sub add"
and change it to
"sub anything"
the add function won't work. Then wipe the text in the Language Preferences Manager where is says "Add a message".
Dave
I've been using Active Guestbook for quite some time, and am very happy with it. The problem I have is that lately I've been getting a lot of Spam messages, like a couple almost every day.

I recently upgraded to the latest version of the Guestbook, which I assumed would solve this problem because users now have to enter that code to add a message. Unfortunately I'm still getting Spam.

Every Spam message contains the Spammers website - they just try to use my guestbook to advertise their own site or product. Would you consider adding a setting to allow me to prevent people entering URLs in the body of their message? Or just to filter out any http://'s that get put in the message? At least that way I'm not promoting their product.

Do you have any other Spam prevention ideas? I've tried banning IPs, but they never use the same IP twice.
17 March 2005

Response:   The most recent version allows you to remove urls from messages.

Is there anyway to remove the search section at the bottom of my guestbook?
I have removed the "words", however there is still the box . . . I don't find it necessary. Thanks if I can and thanks if I can't!
15 March 2005

Response:   We have now added a feature in the Standard Preferences Manager to allow you to remove the search function.
Cor
I used your guestbook for years and it works very well. Now suddenly visitors have to fill out a code (letters only) when they post a message. Can you tell me how to remove this again? Tnx a lot.
14 March 2005

Response:   This is an anti-spam feature we have added. You can remove it via the Standard Preferences Manager if you wish.
