Question #1 In the last few days, my guestbook disappeared and has been replaced by the sample guestbook. How do I restore my guestbook? (I searched the archives and couldn't find an answer.)
Question #2 I think you've upgraded the guestbook to a newer version than my site uses. After I've restored my guestbook, when I want to upgrade, will the new version download over the older one or will I need to reset all the preferences?
Thanks.
12 March 2005
Response:
I've looked at your guestbook and everything, messages, backups and settings, have been removed. You will need to speak to your web host and ask them to provide you with a backup. If you have an email backup, then please send it to us along with your ftp details.
Upgrading does not affect messages and preferences. |

I am wondering if there is a way to block IP addresses to block spammers?
Or do I just need to keep on top of it and keep deleting them?
Some people have nothing better to do!
7 March 2005
Response:
You can block them in the Standard Preferences Manager |

I recently installed your excellent guest book on my friends site. It was very easy to install, and was working great until yesterday. For some reason it will no longer delete or edit messages. The Message Manager opens fine, and after an attempt to delete or edit a message is made, we get the notice that it has been successful. However, after several attempts, the stubborn message still remains in the guest book. My friend is beginning to doubt me when I tell her this is the best free script available anywhere. Your help in regaining her confidence will be greatly appreciated :o) Thank you for your help, and for providing a really good guest book. With Appreciation....Rinda

Have successfully added the GuestBook. How do I extract the email addresses of my guests? Where do they go?
1 March 2005
Response:
The latest version allows you to do this via the Control Panel. |

Just a suggestion for a improvement in your guestbook. Would it be possible to add a verification code to post section of the free guestbook. This would prevent bots from posting their spam in our guestbooks. I use your guestbook and wouldn't dream of changing it.

Now done |

I had to move a website, and I would like to transfer the old postings to the new website. Is there a file where I can "cut and paste" the old entries into it, so the new website shows the entries from the old website. The "restore" feature obviously will not work. Thanks for your help!
23 February 2005
Response:
You need to install a fresh copy of the guestbook on your new site, then copy all the files from the active_guestbook_files directory from the old to the new. |

I'm using your script to replace a very very old UBB one. I can't seem to find where the new entries are going. Are they adding to the guestbook.cgi file?
23 February 2005
Response:
The messages are in the guestbook_data.txt file in the active_guestbook_files directory. This directory will either be in the same place you put the cgi file or in your main html directory, depending on how your web host's system is set up. A word of warning. If you are planning to add messages by manually editing the data file, don't. It will almost certainly not work because of the large number of variables stored for each message. |

I was wondering if there was a way to move the "Add a Message," Homepage and "Search" links so that I can streamline them by putting them into a table with my header, or alternately, if there is a way to remove all three to add my own links and put them where I want. Appreciate any help you can offer. Otherwise, fantastic script.
20 February 2005
Response:
No way to do this without manually editing the script. This would be a bit dangerous. |

I have installed and configured the guestbook and it works perfect. Now i have one wish, to insert the CGI guestbook script in a tablecell (HTML) Is this possible and how to do that....
17 February 2005
Response:
You can only this by using the html header and footer in the Standard Preferences Manager. |

Greetings... I've been using Active Guestbook and Newsboard since more than a year ago, and I recently upgraded to the latest Guestbook version.
The problem is, whenever I try go to the "Add message" screen, the text is all black, while elsewhere in the guestbook, text is white (as I specified in the color preferences, and the STYLE/CSS field, too).
I was wondering if you knew the beggining of the problem, this hadn't happened until I updated my guestbook to the latest version.

Response:
This was a bug. We think it is fixed now. |

I don't really have a quesiton, just a solution to a problem that I ran into using your guestbook.cgi.
In your step #2 under readme.txt you mention to set the directory to permission of 777, when in fact i think you mean 755. After setting mine to 755, my guestbook cgi didn't give me an internal 500 error.
14 February 2005
Response:
755 is best. Some older systems need 777. |

It is excellent script ! After trying many different this one worked from the beginning and has great editing possibility (here is link to my site with the guestbook http://www.mofopartyband.com Now question - I'd like to change font to 'italic' and maybe color just for "webmaster posts". How I can do it. I have no idea how to put CSS code in control panel. (Dreamweaver is doing it for me in most cases). Thanks Mark

Response:
Can't change these I'm afraid. Try the PowerBook. You can change anything there. |

Hi! First off, I just want to say that I've been looking for a guestbook like this for the longest time! A friend of mine referred me to it and I can't believe how simple and flexable this is! PERFECTO!
One small question though... I am trying to change the text color of the "Add A Message", "My Homepage", and the "Seach" links at the top of the page under my logo. Does anyone know where I can do this. Right now it's in red and I need it to be white.
Thanks again!
MSTAR

Response:
The CSS style in the Standard Preferences Manager is controlling the colors by default. You can change the colors there or, if you don't know how, just switch off the CSS and set the colors in the Colors Preferences Manager. |

Id like to say I am looking for answers, but it is more like I don't even know what the questions are yet. I have never worked with CGI or Perl. I have read the readme file that came with your "newsboard" download but references like "path to your perl interpreter" and others mean nothing to me. I am not even sure if the newsboard is to be hosted on my computer, your server or directnic (who hosts my site.) I guess what I am asking is...Is there a primer or a "getting started with CGI/Perl" document you can recommend that might help me to understand what I need to get started?...something that would "spoonfeed" me information assuming I know nothing?
Thanks.
6 February 2005
Response:
We don't really support perl basics like this BUT...
You don't need to know anything about perl itself (though it can help).
The path to your perl interpreter is 99% of the time the one that is already in the first line of the script, so you can probably ignore that.
The scripts are to be uploaded to you own site.
You need to have a site that allows perl scripts (known as cgi files) to be used. Most do, but some rubbish ones don't (your host, directnic, doesn't appear to allow cgi files, so you know what you have to do; netfirms.com seem quite good). They will very likely (though not always) have a cgi-bin directory somewhere on the site into which you need to put perl scripts.
You need an ftp program to upload the script to the cgi-bin directory. We recommend ws_ftp, available from http://www.ipswitch.com/_download/wsftphome.asp - it used to be free but I think you have to pay for it now. There will be many free ftp programs available at www.download.com, just type "ftp" into the search. We have no idea how good or bad these may be.
Using your ftp program, you create a directory IN your cgi-bin directory as suggested in the readme file.
You then upload the script INTO that directory. You MUST upload the script in ASCII mode. Your ftp program will clearly indicate how to do this. Binary mode is the alternative but the script definitely won't work if you use this.
Change the permissions on the directory to 755 (in ws_ftp you right-click on the directory name and then select "properties"), and then change the permissions on the script itself to 755 also, in the same way. (These permissions normally work fine, but you may need to try 777 or 750 on the directory.)
Then you just call the script via the url as explained in the readme.
Good luck. |

Response:
Just select NO in the 'Show horizontal line between messages' part of the Standard Preferences Manager. |

I'm about to install your guestbook script. But I've got an important guestions: - is it possible to add/import my old entries from an old different guestbook to Active Guestbook? - or is it possible to edit AG and add old entries manually?
Thanks 4 help.
3 February 2005
Response:
You will have to add them manually. |

ok,.. I searched through the message board for about an hour and didn't see a relevant post to my query,.. so here it goes.
I have my Guestbook set to display the messages in alphabetical order, according to the name of the user. However, this is only for the guestbook pages itself and doesn't seem to translate over into the control panel.
What I mean is, when I go into the "Message Manager", (where you can delete/edit messages),.. the posts aren't logged there in alphabetical order as they are in the guestbook itself. Instead, they seem to be logged in reverse order,.. the most recent entry being #1, and the very first entry being at the end (currently #210 or something).
This makes it hard to try to find a specific entry when, in the guestbook, it's entry#12, but in the Mess/Man. it could be entry #187.
Is there a way to make the Message Manager portion of the control panel display in alphabetical order like the guestbook does?
If you guys could help with this, I'd really appreciate it,.. it would save me a lot of time if i don't have to go through every single entry to try to find the one that need.
Thanks, Phil

Is there a way to disable the censorship option? I'm getting disallowed word errors even though there is no profanity in my post.
29 January 2005
Response:
Earlier version of the guestbook blocked some profanity by default, but if you upgrade to the latest version this won't happen. |

How can your script be configured to be used with Frontpage 2003. My host has disabled ftp because of Frontpage extensions?

I'm afraid we don't support Frontpage. Sorry. |
