I've been getting lots of spam on my guestbook. Is there anything I can do?

Response:   The latest version (version 7.0) has added a feature that helps limit this by adding an extra field in the Message Preview page. Try it out.

I just noticed that my guestbook entries kept getting deleted all by itself! I managed to undelete them one by one from the Trash manager, but the next day I check, the entries have been deleted again. I was wondering if this is just someone hacking and trying to be funny, or perhaps an evil bot of some sort, deleting all the entries? I've changed my password already...

Response:   For some reason, someone has set the settings in the Standard Preferences Manager that control the number of days that messages are kept in the guestbook to blank (zero). I have changed this now and it should work okay.

1. How do I get rid of the search box on the bottom.
2. I can't get to center the message boxes. Although, it says "centered" in the configuration.

Response:   You can't get rid of the search box I'm afraid.

The messages aren't centered because the image at the top is wider that the width you have set for your board. Either use a narrower image or change the width setting in the Standard Preferences Manager.

Can I make the "Your email address" feild a required feild and the same way the "Your name" and "Your meassage" feilds are?

Your hardcoded script allows guestbook entries to be displayed vertically, one above the next.

I am trying to duplicate the following url:

Hence, I need to display Four entries per ROW, with a graphic gif image of a candle beside to the left of each entry.

I'd like to display either 16 or 20 entries per page, that is 4x4 or 4x5 column by row display.

I've been googling for a number of days for a gb script to modify that does this, and that's how I got here.

Response:   Could possibly be done but would require quite a bit of tweaking. You would need to contact us by email to agree a price if you wanted us to go ahead.

Response:   You can't remove it but you can change the question in the Language Prefereces Manager

I would like to send this thank you message but i only want to send it once per unique visitor. Is there a way? Maybe in the future?

I installed the script corrently and when I typed http://mydomain/guestbook/guestbook.cgi?setup it shows the guestbook has been setup correctly. However, it keeps asking me for the password when I try to access the control panel. I deleted the active.txt file as instruction and type in active as password but get no luck - it just keep asking me for password. What should I do?

confused
hi, i've download and installed the guestbook for our website, but when i look in the /cgi-bin/guestbook directory, there are no data files. i've looked in every folder on our server, and they're not anywhere. the weird part is that i'm able to make changes in the control panel, and the guestbook will reflect the changes. it's just that i don't know where the files are being written.

any ideas?

Response:   Windows servers can end up putting these files anywhere, often in the root directory.

I want to remove your guestbook -- it's great, I just don't want to use it where it is but want to use it elsewhere. Do I just delete the pages or is there something else I need to do.

Response:   You need to install the guestbook from scratch in the new directory and then copy the files from the old guestbook.

Have been trying for over a week. It worked 2 times then disappeared.
The error logs are: "directory is writable by others:" The directions said to set the permissions at 777, or if that would not work, 755 which is what I had to use. It said to set my guestbook.cgi at 755, which I did. If my permissions for the guestbook directory are set at 777, it will not allow me to install it.

When I enter http://www.mydomain.com/cgi-bin/guestbook/guestbook.cgi?action=control_panel to install the guestbook, the file loads, but then my computer asks me in what program I want to open the file. What should I do?

Response:   This usually means that the directory in which you have put the script is not perl enabled. Sometimes strange settings can mean that one type of browser (e.g. IE) can load it while another (e.g. NS) will not.

Great Script!! One question though - how to you change the "guestbook" text ie I want to change "You can search this guestbook by..." to " You can search this Book of Condolences by..." and likewise "Back to Guestbook" to "Back to Book of Condolence" and also "You can search this guestbook" to "You can Search this Book of Condolence" - i've tries editing the .pl file but to no avail - can you help please?

I am trying to set up this guest book but im having difficulties with permisions. If i set both directory and script to 755 i get a error "Can't open ./active_guestbook_files/user_html.txt " From reading other FAQs i understand that this is a permission problem. My web host insists that all scripts and folders must be 755. Can i change this script so that it writes to a folder outside of the cgi-bin?

Twice I have had the Guestbook operational only to have it disapear within an hour! I get a Internal Server Error Message i.e. "The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request."
I started installing this 6 days ago and I'm at my wits end. Can anyone offer any suggestions?

I would like to upgrade my guestbook to the latest version. It says to just upload the new version. Will this keep all of the customization that I have done (background, headers, etc.)?

Response:   It is best to backup your old files but uploading the new script should not affect them at all.

I run this script at www.livefromhawaii.com under GUESTBOOK. I have 33 entries, and every time someone posts now, they post does not appear. I've have 4 people including myself try to post and they just don't show. No changes have been made to the script, no max # of message limit, and plenty of server space. Is there a remedy for this? Also, how do I access the management, I forgot what to add after .cgi! Thanks for the great script, hope I can get it working again!
