Greetings Sirs I have searched the boards for answer but yielded none. Somehow, I was able to mess up my guestbook.cgi. download it on my desktop and added a line (favicon) using dreamweaver. When I placed it back, it gave me an 500 error How would I be able to get it back? Thank you for your time ReD

Response:   Just use the original cgi file.

What is the 'Generate Email List" function in the control panel for?
13 March 2007

Response:   It allows you to generate a list of all the email addresses added to the guestbook.

Can anyone help? I have 3 questions about the active guestbook. 1. - How can I hide email addresses from the spam harvesters, but keep the email address live, to enable people who read the guestbook to send a reply? 2. – I would like to switch off the security code numbers, firstly because I never let a signing go into the guestbook without my approval and secondly as was the case for a while today, your site was down and the numbers were not being generated. 3. – What is the difference between the Free guestbook and the Licensed guestbook? Is the Licensed more customisable? If so, in what way?
1 March 2007

Response:   1 - By munging the addresses you can hide them from spam harvesters. 2 - You can't switch off the security codes. We have had a few little problems over the last while, but the site is accessible more than 99.9% of the time. 3- There is no difference between the licensed and unlicensed versions apart from a license number. You need a license if you make money from your site in any way or if you provide the script to someone else.
Thanks
Libeth
Hello Active Script Team, It seems that I have a serious problem. I installed the script last Friday and it worked very well. On Monday ALL messages went to the Spam-Folder and I could not add new messages (spam folder). So we re-installed a fresh script - and we get the same story: All messages went in the Spam folder today. I can not imagine that the reason is the correct number. (we had no email verification). What shall I do ??? Is it possible to get older versions than 14.2?

Response:   Email us with the url.

Is there any way to change the words used for munging e-mail addresses, when that option is turned on? For non-English guestbooks, it may not be obvious for users what "dot" and "at" means. So is there any way to customize/translate those words?
12 February 2007

Response:   We will try to add this in the next release.

Well I have now got a new Guestbook for our Village Website!! What a wonderful script, took me a while to get my head around it, as I have never used this sort of thing before, but I did it! I have always used a Bravenet Guestbook, but not anymore!! I have just got to transfer all of the entries into our new Guestbook (it will take about a week!!). Just one small question, can I change how many underlined number (e.g. 4 instead of 2) are shown to guests when they sign? I have rated your script 10/10

Response:   Can't change this I'm afraid.

I have several messages going into the spam folder that are real entries I can not figure out how to get them into the actual guest book can someone help please?
2 January 2007

Response:   You can't move messages from the spam log to the guestbook. The message is classified as spam until the guest confirms by selecting the correct numbers. If the guest doesn't select the correct numbers, it stays in the spam. There is no way around this. If there was, the spammers would work out how to do it.

This is not really a question, but more a suggestion. I've been using version 13.4 for about one week now, and it works great! Not one single spam-message has made it through the filters, even though I'm using rather liberal settings. But the spam log gets filled up rather quickly, with around 150 spam attempts each day. The suggestion is to add one field to the spam log - IP-adress. And also a sorting funvtion would be very nice, so you quickly can see if some IP adresses are very annoying. Then it would be easy to block them without having to register them in Excel or something. That would make it much easier to reduse the size of the spam log file. On a sidenote, I've used version 5.9 for a way too long time, and with IP and word filters used actively I usually got less than 5 spam messages each day. But a spam-free guestbook is better ;-)
13 November 2006

Response:   Blocking IPs doesn't really work against spam. It works okay if you want to stop someone who is just annoying you, but spammers use sophisticated IP spoofing, so blocking the IP of a spam message won't really made any difference

I have just updated to version 13.7, but for some reason the guestbook won't load. Could you advise please. Thanks, Glen
13 November 2006

Response:   There was a bug in 13.7 that stopped the guestbook running on some servers. Fixed in later versions.

Like Rick below, legitimate messages are in my spam log, 4 of them. I use one script on my site as a place for grieving parents to write a 'letter to heaven', and this morning four of those letters are in my spam log instead of where they're supposed to be and I can't see any way to retrieve them. They absolutely ARE legitimate messages. Example, here's one of them: "Hi baby.I miss you soo much! I can't stop thinking about you! Today we hung up that collage of all your pictures in Kaelyn's room. Now you're picture is with us everywhere we go. Nadia, Mackenzie & Kaelyn say HI.and they all love you & miss you sooooo much too!We talk about you everyday. It makes us smile! A million hugs & kisses, angel!" That's NOT spam. How can I pull out the information and enter it into the guestbook properly for the parents?
12 November 2006

Response:   Messages in the spam log are messages that don't make it as far as the guestbook. When the guest is asked to type in the selected numbers, the spam log takes a note of the message in case the correct numbers are not entered. The message is held in the spam log until the correct numbers are entered. Once the correct numbers are entered, the full message is added to the guestbook and the note is removed from the spam log. If the message doesn't get added to the guestbook, then it is the fault of the person adding the message. They are not entering the correct numbers.

I cannot find any information in the Help file or in the "FAQ" regarding the purpose of A12 (and A13) in version 13.3 of Active Guestbook.
12 November 2006

Response:   These were part of early anti-spam features. It is best to select Yes for A12 and put your domain name into A13.
Johnny
I do not wish to require visitors wishing to add a message to enter anything in the Name field. The Message field, yes, but not the Name field.
9 November 2006

Response:   Can't do this with Active Guestbook. Active Powerbook does what you need.
Martin
I have upgraded from version 12.2 to version 13.6. However, I still receive the message "You are using Active Guestbook version 12.2." in the control panel. What happened?
8 November 2006

Response:   You must not have uploaded the file over the original file, or the upload failed, or perhaps IE has the page stored in its cache.
Rick
I have visitors leaving legitimate messages that are showing up in the spam log. Why is this happening and how do I move them into the messages.
5 November 2006

Response:   They may LOOK like legitimate messages (e.g. 'your site is wonderful'), but they almost certainly are not. The reason they are in the spam log is because the person (or more likely the spambot) failed to select the correct numbers when asked. Genuine visitors will usually do this okay. Active Guestbook removes the urls that the spambots include in the messages, sometimes making it appear as if the message is genuine. If a genuine visitor fails to correctly select the correct numbers, all they have to do is go back and try it again.

Hi. great product. Thanks. I' using V13.2. Where can I change the message regarding entering a verification code? I want it say, "Enter the underlined numbers" Thanks!
3 November 2006

Response:   In the Language Preferences Manager look at the 'Add a message preview' screen section which has the bit you need.
Johnny
I use Windows XP and the latest version of Active Guestbook. How do I learn how to set the value in D1 of the Standard Preferences? It's described as the "Path to your sendmail programme."
3 November 2006

Response:   You need to ask your host if perl has an email program included. If you are running perl on your own XP, you'll probably have to search out a program that does the job. Good luck.
Mark
Have just upgraded to your latest version and for some reason my icons for _mail and _url are not showing up, in their place is the text "MOVE IMAGE PLEASE". Can you tell me what I have done wrong, thanks.
2 November 2006

Response:   You have not moved the guestbook images onto your site. You need to move all smileys and images to your own site and change ALL references in the Smileys Manager and the Color Preferences Manager to exclude ANY link to active-scripts.net.
