Do any of your scripts allow the posters to upload small files? We have some members that would like to upload small word files so others can come in and down load them.
thanks
Michelle

I downloaded and installed guestbook.cgi a couple of days ago, first on my remote server and (when that didn't work) on my home (Mac) server. I check (with 'which perl') that the path to Perl was correct, I chmod-ed the guestbook directory to 777 and the script to 755. But each time I try to run the program I get an 'Internal Server Error'. My error log tells me: 'No such file or directory: exec of /Library/WebServer/CGI-Executables/guestbook/guestb
ook.cgi failed', and yet both directory and file are visibly there. I'm perplexed! what am I doing wrong? Thanks!
12 November 2004

Response:   Try setting the directory to 755

I have a full service host - the perl path is correct - the permissions are 777 on guestbook - and 755 on cgi-bin - and when I try to initiate the setup - I get a misconfig error. Any suggestions? - I use cute ftp to upload
11 November 2004

Response:   755 on the guestbook? (as it suggests in the readme).

What do you do if you have forgotten your password to the control panel?
7 November 2004

Response:   Delete the file "active.txt" in the active_guestbook_files directory. The password will be reset to the word "active".
Liam
Do you have any idea how to get the guestbook and newsboards running through purpleclouds plesk domain control panel. You cant se permissions as numbers but I have enabled all of the different read and write options it allows but i cant run the setup as it says in the readme.
7 November 2004

Response:   Don't know anything about this I'm afraid. You should speak to your host if you haven't already done so.

I tried using the search function to no avail. Question: Is it possible to change from a 24 hour to a 12 hour format?
1 November 2004

Response:   You need Active Powerbook for this.

Hi
Just installed your guestbookscript and love it! The only thing I would like to add is the abillity to choose language? Is it possible to have 2 language files and call each of them from different links on my page? Of course I want all existing messeges to appear in both!
28 October 2004

Response:   Powerbook does this.
Keith
Powerbook trial I can not find the place to replace your banner with my own (pb.jpg) and your page says 24$ but the readme says 54$ what is it?
23 October 2004

Response:   You change the image in the Page Layout Manager. The price at the moment is $24.

We have returned from holiday to find that all the messages that were on our guestbook have disappeared. In the manager we had set the number of days to keep messages as 0 and believe that this should have kept them permanently. We had set the backups to be once a month but do not seem to have these either. Can you help us please?
20 October 2004

Response:   No idea. We don't know the address or the ftp details.
Jay
Hi. A quick question. On a recent update to my site I accidentally overwrote the existing guestbook.cgi file. Now all my old messages are gone and I would like to have them back. What can I do?
19 October 2004

Response:   We believe your site is commercial. You were emailed about this some time ago. The script thus requires a license.

removing the search feature
Just a tip for all. I also have a smaller website which is not large enough to use the search feature. I tinkered with it, and it is pretty easy to remove it. To remove the big search table at the bottom, open the cgi file and delete lines starting with 3736 through and including 3758. This removes the search box off the bottom of your page.
line 3618, remove and , leaving only $TXT_search. You can replace '$TXT_search' with 'Search Disabled'. Either way you will be left with the word SEARCH or Search Disabled up top in black but not as a link. This removes search link from the main guestbook page. When you add a message the search link is back at that screen, though. to remove the link form here, look a few lines up from the one you just edited... it is origionally '$TXT_back_search_again', again make it 'Search Disabled'. There is one more line above you have to replace, again a couple lines above the previous edit. it reads '$TXT_search' again replace that with Search Disabled.
If you delete too much or the wrong thing you're guestbook wont work, so change them one part at a time, upload it and make sure the guestbook still comes up fine. if not, undo what you deleted/edited, and make sure you didnt remove too much. when you get one ok, do the next and so on till all 4 are gone. I haven't been able to completley remove the top words where Search used to be without throwing off the whole formatting for 'There are now X messages...' or screwing the whole thing up so it doesnt visabbly load as it should. This solution is better than nothing, though, simply removing the bottom search table and making the top links 'Search Disabled'. Enjoy guys, great guestbook too.

How can I remove the yellow from the text input fields for Name and email address on the 'add a message' screen?
15 October 2004

Response:   Which yellow do you mean? Please reply by email to support@active-scripts.net

My guestbook was working fine, now all of a sudden it won't post or show in the control panel that theres a message waiting to be approved.
I uploaded exactly according to the directions. I did some test signing too and its not working.
Thanks

Response:   I've just added a message and it is appearing in your control panel

On my site, links are underlined. I am calling my guestbook.cgi guestbook via SSI into an existing page on the site. On this page, my links are no longer underlined due to the font setup in the cgi.
How can i not only, make my links on the rest of the page underlined again but also underline links in the guestbook (add message, email links... etc)
Thank you
11 October 2004

Response:   The appearance of you links is being controlled via the CSS section in the Standard Preferences Manager. Just turn the CSS off and you should be okay.

i transferred my guestbook to a new version of my site but i keep getting error messages when i try to access the guestbook.
i recently switched to a new hosting plan with the same company. i downloaded the guestbook folder from the old server and uploaded it to the new cgi bin on the new server. domain name, all other pages on site are exactly the same. i checked with my hosting co. and the cgi bin is working and activated.
any suggestions on how to retain my old guestbook?
10 October 2004

Response:   You can't transfer a guestbook that way. You need to install a new copy of the script on the new site, and THEN copy over the files from the old guestbook.
Chris
I use the active news board with a band website to post band news and such, and my question is what is the possibility of using the program twice on the same site, but with seperate control panels. (i.e continue using the now configured board for the band news, and install another to post the bands show dates on a different page) Or could I even use the same cgi script to run the second page, but create some additional pages to support the new 'shows' post board? Thanks for all the help, and props for the killer script, it works really well!
9 October 2004

Response:   On Unix servers you can use as many copies of the script as you like. Windows servers may cause problems.

How do I update my guestbook to the newest version without losing all my language, color etc configurations? And is it possible to use emoticons?
8 October 2004

Response:   If you copy a newer version of the script over an older version, all your messages and setting should be retained (unless you have edited the script manually). You can't use emoticons at the moment.
First, I want to say how great Active Scripts is and I love the guestbook. I've used your script for well over a year now and without any problems outside of my grasp, but recently I have had spammers (or some sort of bot) enter simply their website address and (i'm guessing) just putting a space in for the required info. (i put an example of this in my name here ^) Is there a way I can make the required fields require more than one digit and have it be more than just a space? Thanks alot.

Response:   Email us with your guestbook address.

I have a client with newsboard installed on their site for Job listings. They now want to add a press realeases page they can update. Are there any issues or pitfalls installing two copies of newsboard on the same site?
24 September 2004

Response:   The only problem can happen when trying to run on a Windows server. Perl can end up putting the data files for both versions in the same place.

Hi, great guestbook! Just one problem: When I try to enter the guestbook, I get a message that says, 'Can't open the mail program. Please check the mail path in the Control Panel.', but it only appears the first time the guestbook is visited that DAY. Any time after that on the same day it works fine. The next day, it does the same thing.
I believe the guestbook is trying to send me the email backups. The path to the sendmail program on my server is /usr/slib/sendmail, and I entered that in the control panel, but here's the problem: Whenever I enter in the path in the control panel, after I click 'Update Preferences' and then scroll back down to the textbox, there is a space added to the text already in the box. Every time I click 'Update', another space is added. I think that's why it can't find the sendmail program, because of the extra spaces. If I re-enter the text into the box, a space is added whenever I click 'Update'. Is this a bug? What do I do?
22 September 2004

Response:   There does seem to have been a small bug that put an extra space at the end of the sendmail path. Please upgrade to the most recent version on our site.
