Hi, I can't seem to get the default control panel password to work. I have deleted the active.txt file and then tried 'active' for the password. When I do, I see this message:
Set-Cookie: activea=acEChKli6Jeg.; Content-type: text/html
Then it brings me back to the Control Panel login screen. What seems to be my problem?

Response:   This is a problem on a few sites using particular types of Perl. At the moment, we have no workaround to solve this.

This site seems like a dream! BUT, unfortunately I'm having problems. I get the message that I have installed it correctly, but when I try to access the control panel and enter active as a password, it just kicks me back to the enter password page without any reason why. I have cookies enabled, changed the CHMOD on the directory and file, but my domain provider might have Windows NT or 2000 as servers. Any ideas?
My email address is on this one!
Thanks!

Is there a command to tell newsboard to display a particular news item. Eg, on my front page I click 'newsitem3', and then newsboard displays all the news as usual, BUT scrolls immediately to news item 3?
21 April 2002

Response:   This would require some customization.

Can I change the text 'Add a message' at the user guest book page to a submit button and change the text in the button to 'Post your comments'?
And change the text after a comment has been added to a button also that says 'Return to guest book'?
18 April 2002

Response:   No way to do this I'm afraid.
Marc
I get this when trying to setup:
Can't open ./active_guestbook_files/user_html.txt
18 April 2002

Response:   This is a permissions problem, but NOT a permissions problem of the script itself. The fact that the script was able to run and give you this message means that the script itself has been set up correctly.
The problem is with the directory in which the script is. If you are using NT or similar, then you need to get your web host to change permissions to allow scripts to create new files. If you are using Unix then you need to play about with the permissions of the directory. Please note that many hosts will NOT work if you don't put the script into a directory of its own and set permissions properly on the directory. In most cases, setting the directory to 777 should work, but some hosts require 755, 750 or 705.

I want a fixed background on the page, but when I add the comment 'image.gif' bgproperties='fixed' only the text 'image.gif' is parsed. Is the a way to send special characters with the script like '\'' in php.
Great script by the way!!!!
18 April 2002

Response:   If you use something like the following in the CSS section in the Standard Preferences Manager it will lock the background...
body {
background-image: url(http://www.active-scripts.net/active_guestbook/background.jpg);
background-attachment: fixed }
Change the url of the jpg image to your own.

Is there any way to change the order of particular messages? (not just the order of the entire newsboard)
17 April 2002

Response:   If you need to move individual messages about, the only way you can do this is by editing the newsboard_data.txt file itself.
David
If I set the system as private, how do I create user accounts? Perhaps there should be a web based interface for this.
16 April 2002

Response:   You can't create user accounts at the moment. There is only one password for access to private and restricted newsboards.
Marc
When I try to setup the guestbook I get the error '500 Internal Server Error'. When I check the apache logs, it says:
[error] Premature end of script headers: /home/marc/.html/cgi-bin/guestbook/guestbook.cgi
What could be the problem?
15 April 2002

Response:   Could be almost anything. An incorrect Perl path in the first line of the script would be the first thing to look at.
Kenny
I would like to keep my articles in order by date. If I go in and edit the date it sometimes the article I edited doesn't go in to the correct order. Is there anything I can do to fix my problem. Thank-You
15 April 2002

Response:   This is because the guestbook actually sorts by the order the messages were added rather than the date stamp.
Kim

14 April 2002

Response:   active

Hi..
Is there anyway to not view the message preview screen and the confirmation one!!! We would like 2 skip those two and take the visitors directlty to our guestbook after posting!!!
thnx...
13 April 2002

Response:   Not at the moment. Sorry.
Paul
A very nice script indeed! It (version b5.15) works just fine here EXCEPT that when one clicks 'Add a message' (action=add) we get the unhelpful 'The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request' message. All the permissions are fine and, like I said, everything else seems to work just fine.
13 April 2002

Response:   Are you using an asterix or a question mark in the list of disallowed words?
If you are, take them out. If not, please send us the address of your guestbook.

Is there any way to remove the radio buttons and search box and search button at the bottom of the page?

Can i run 2 separate guestbooks on the same server?
5 April 2002

Response:   You can run as many as you like. Just create separate directories under your cgi-bin directory and put a copy of guestbook.cgi into each one. E.g. cgi-bin/gb1/guestbook.cgi, cgi-bin/gb2/guestbook.cgi etc.

By the way, you can rename the guestbook.cgi file to anything you want. It will still work fine.

I want to report a strange text that appears in my guestbook.

the text is the following:

TEXT='#000000' LINK='#000000' VLINK='#000000' ALINK='#000000' marginwidth='0' marginheight='0' LEFTMARGIN='0' TOPMARGIN='0' >
please I want to be able to solve this, thanks
4 April 2002

Response:   One or two "free" web providers have problems with the scripts. They insert ads into the underlying html which cause problems.

Tripod is a well known one that has difficulties. We recommend that you try netfirms.com, an excellent free resource which works superbly.

Sometimes when I add a message, I don't get an approval page. It just goes straight to the page that tells me that the message has been added. But when I look, the message has not been added???
3 April 2002

Response:
The scripts do not allow you to post the same message twice. Often, a guest will double-click to confirm the message instead of single-click. You would thus end up with two copies of the same message. The scripts handle this by only adding the first message. If you try to add it again you will simply be told that the message was added.

Somehow the following text files get corrupted...

thank you user, thank you, user default and the user_style text files.

Somehow something keeps adding empty lines to that files, so the files grows bigger. And take more cpu time to load the guestbook. And it's unneccesary. Hope you'll find it. Tnxs
3 April 2002

Response:
This seems to happen on a small number of servers using a particular version of Perl. So far we have been unable to find out why. Once you have the script set up the way you want it, you can simply go into the Standard Preferences Manager and edit these files back into a compact format.
Jim
Is there a way to add more fields(input boxes) to the add page?
3 April 2002

Response:   Not at the moment unfortunately.
