Got the update, and I like the improvements! I'd like to see the IP address of spammers in the spam log in a future update so I can block them from my site entirely. Nice work, folks!
1 November 2006
Response:
Blocking IP addresses has very little value any more. All the spamming software can (and does) easily send fake IP addresses. |

Is there a way to host the CAPTCHA image on our own server?
21 October 2006
Response:
Not at the moment. Because we regularly update the Captcha code, the images need to sit on our site for the moment. |

I no longer use this guestbook, but I do not remember my user name and password and I keep getting junk emails though this script. The return address is MY EMAIL, so I cannot block them. Help! Get me out!
20 October 2006
Response:
Just change the name of the guestbook to something else, e.g. forum.cgi, and the spam will stop |

Is there a way to adjust the timezone within the script, so it doesn't display the server time, but the time where most of our visitors live? Thanks in advance for your answer! (I did a search on timezone, but couldn't find anything)
24 July 2006
Response:
In the Date Format Manager. |

I was trying to put my header, a banner, at the top of the Guestbook, by inserting an html code into the script, but something went wrong that caused a big delay in the uploading of the revised guestbook.cgi script and prevented me from getting to the control panel. What happened? It messed up my Internet operation so I deleated the Guestbook.
11 July 2006
Response:
You should NEVER edit the script itself. You can easily add your own header etc. by editing the header html in the Standard Preferences Manager. |

I see several posts re the dropdown number and the "type in the graphic number" check on the next page. I realise they are to prevent auto posting by spammers, but why both? I want to use the script, but it is from a controlled server so spam is not an issue. I can hear the users complaining already. :-) Surely the option should be there to turn it off. It is *my* problem if I get spam because of it.
6 July 2006
Response:
Unfortunately it is not only your problem. Thousands of users install our script but then leave it and don't go back to it. What happens is that tens of thousands of spam messages get left. Active Guestbook then gets a reputation of being a spam dump. |

Ive been trying to install active powerbook cgi in the cgi bin. permissions are set, ascii transfered, tried usr/bin/perl and usr/local/bin/perl but when i type the address into the browser it asks me what prog i would like to open it (DZsoft perl editor) and opens the text file. Yet my host says perl is enabled. If i can get it running. i will buy a licence guaranteed. Thanks Jim
6 July 2006
Response:
Your server is NOT properly set up for perl. |

I have the Homepage and Mail images saved on my server. When I edit the url's in the Color Preferences Manager and I set the value of "Use your own image between messages" to "Yes". But I still have the error "MOVE IMAGE PLEASE". What do I wrong?
24 May 2006
Response:
There are probably more images in the Color Preferences Manager that point at active-scripts.net. Remove or edit these and all should be okay. |

I'm having your unique active guestbook, but recently i faced a serious problem in it. Suddently all the entries wiped out! why? Fresh entry is posible, but it is not showing after entry. Could u pls. tell me what to do now. I shall look forward to your support.
12 May 2006
Response:
Owners of very old versions of the guestbook who allow their guestbooks to get heavily spammed will eventually lose all their messages because of corruptions in the spam messages themselves. Newer versions of the guestbook deal with this as long as you use the anti-spam features included. If you choose not to, you are on your own. |

I use smileys on my own url. But the icons for homepage (url) and mail (mail.gif) cannot be parametered by me. The Link to the gif-files use your active-scripts.net-domain. Where do i have to fix this? (sorry for my bad english)
11 May 2006
Response:
www.active-scripts.net/smileys.zip gives you all the images. |

In the message manager of version 10.2, the "delete all messages waiting aproval" and "delete all private messages" is run together as all one link. I've found that one bracket is missing in closing the 'bold' after the link to delete "messages waiting aproval". If you have an html editor you can insert the "pointy bracket" and your links on the message manager page will separate into the 2 separate links that they should be. I can't leave an example here because html is not allowed.
11 May 2006
Response:
Thanks for that. Now fixed in version 11. |

I need to use an smtp email client with your guestbook. Having searched the FAQ only ref found was as follows: Active Guestbook Pro (out shortly) will have support for smtp email if you haven't got sendmail. this was dated 7 may 2002, did you produce active guestbook pro and if so where can I find it as I cant find any ref to it else where. Thanks for a brill script.
8 May 2006
Response:
We didn't produce a Pro version. We just kept adding to the free version but there were too many smtp differences between servers to get it to work easily. |

You need to add your domain to A13 in the Standard Preferences Manager |

I downloaded the smiley.zip file to my server, but how do I point the guestbook to that folder instead of yours? I couldn't find it in the preferences manager.
2 March 2006
Response:
You have to go through each smiley in the Smiley Manager and edit each url. |

Just today a problem started and I've made no changes to my guestbook or browser. When I go to the guestbook, "Content-type: text/html" appears at the top top the guestbook. When I try to go into the control panel, I get an error message "Set Cookies activea= blah, blah". Has anyone else seen this. I tried re-uploading the .CGI file but to no avail.
28 February 2006
Response:
Looks like your host has changed some of their settings. |

Hi, I would like to upgrade to the latest version to help with the spam problem. How do I do that without losing the existing messages?
22 February 2006
Response:
All your messages and setting will be retained when you upgrade. |

I'd like to block a range of IP addresses. Can I use a hyphen or slash, for example: 221.144-221.168? Or do I have to add each one separately: 221.144 221.145 221.146? I've never had a legitimate post from Korea, so I'm willing to risk blocking large blocks of IPs. Actually, I'd be willing to block the while dang country if that's possible. BTW, I'm using version 10.2. The number verification feature works GREAT, but I'd still like to block the IPs of the few spams I get. It's personal now.
20 February 2006
Response:
You can't block a range of IP addresses unfortunately. You will have to add them individually. I'm not sure that IP blocking will stop that many though. Using A1 in the Standard Preferences Manager is better. |

Running newest version on a Windows 2003 shared platform. I need to run two seperate versions of guestbook on the same site. Previous posts by others have been told its difficult since Windows will place the GB folders at the root and each GB wants to read from this location. Is there something that can be done to fix this and allow mutipal copies on the same site? I have done this on a previous host using virtual directories for the cgi but on my current shared hosting this is not possible. Any suggestions? B
16 February 2006
Response:
Only thing you can do is run Active Powerbook instead. |
