Someone has earlier asked about how to disable the "number check" when posting new messages. Request a future possibility to disable this... however is there a quick and easy way to disable this in the script itself for the time beeing? Best regards Sam
15 February 2006
Response:
You can't disable this. It is an anti-spam requirement. |

Do you maintain an announcement list to let users know when you've updated the guestbook scripts? If so, I would like to be on it.

Response:
We don't, but we might try it. |

Is it possible to turn on A5 (required code)in the preview page. and turn of the dropdownmenu numbercode in the add-page ? It is a long way scrolling down to 99 ? for the rest you have a great script ! (I see that in this script you have done this so it must be possible to get rid of the dropdown code, How?)
18 January 2006
Response:
You can't remove this feature. It is essential to stop the tens of thousands of spam messages that are being added daily to our guestbooks. |

I have uploaded version 10.1 and have noticed that if an incorrect number is selected and then Continue button is pressed a new page with the words "Incorrect Selection" appears. However, when I press the back button on my browser it does not go back. If I then double click the back button it takes me back to the original page I came from not back to the Guestbook page so that the correct number can be selected. This means that the message has been lost and people would have to start all over again. I then reloaded version 10.0a and find it has the same problem.
14 January 2006
Response:
We can't replicate this problem. It works fine for us. Please email support@active-scripts.net with more information about the type and version of browser you are using. |

'A13 - Enter part of the guestbook domain here' What exactly do I enter in here? Fantastic program - just updated effortlessly from a very early version. Nice to have some anti-spam features. Cathy

Response:
If for example you are at www.migrosoft.com, you would put this, or part of it (perhaps migrosoft), in A13. |

I love your guestbook. I use the script and luckily have not had a spam problem, been using it over 2 years now. I just upgraded to the most recent version but I don't care for the "SELECT THIS NUMBER" as for me, it just makes it more awkward for someone to use. Is there any way I can turn this feature off ? Any chance in the next version? I have a friend who uses your script as well, he does have a spam issue so of course he loves the new version. Thanks!
12 January 2006
Response:
The Add a Number feature is now compulsory, as you can read from answers already given here. If you haven't been spammed in the past, you will be eventually. This feature is essential to keep ahead of the spammers. |

I have just uploaded the new version of the active guestbook script and have noticed the addition of this line at the bottom of the guestbook: (( tried to paste it but it wont let me because it's html .... it points to a gif image titled v10 - the url being the active script website)) How do I get rid of it? Cheers! p.s. By the way, I've used lots of guestbooks in the past and your's is by far the BEST!

Response:
Now fixed in 10.0a.
Thanks |

I don't understand the new addition requiring the user to select a number before posting their message. There is already a feature requiring letters to be entered if enabled (A5)
11 January 2006
Response:
There is indeed, but too many users are not enabling the letter requirement meaning that loads of guestbooks are becoming spam traps and ending up with users begging us for free support which is taking up too much of our time. We have over a quarter of a million copies of Active Guestbook out there being used. The number selection is also much more subtle than the letter entry (which can in fact be hacked by someone keen enough). There is a small group of numbers that come up on each guestbook, only about 8 individual numbers. This group is totally UNIQUE to your guestbook, so that spamming software can not possibly know what this group will be. |

My guestbbok just stopped working today. All the messages that were there are gone. I tried upgrading to the new version and also using backup manager but all my messages are lost. I can not post a new message but what's wierd is that it goes through to my e-mail informing me that I got a new message but when I check my webpage there is no message. I've also checked message manager and it does not show any messages. Can someone elighten me as to what might have happened? And how I might rectify this misfortune? I had been getting quite a bit of spam lately. Could that have caused this? TIA Ed

All of my posts were deleted today. Not sure how but they are all gone. My guestbook was getting spammed on a regular basis and I was deleting them as they came in. But now they are all gone. Is there a possibility my guestbook could have been hacked?

The guestbook does not allow the same message to be entered and displayed twice. Is there a way to disable this feature?
22 December 2005
Response:
This has been a feature for 5 years and we would rather keep it that way. There is no way to disable it but we could look at this as an option in the future. |

Thank you for the prompt response to my previous question. And thanks again for the remarkable script. My spam has dropped from 30 - 40 a day, to zero!

I've been using your great script for quite a while. Because of the spam problem, I recently upgraded to the latest version. Now, one of my frequent posters can no longer post. She is with AOL, and your script seems to think she is posting from another domain. Another of my script users is also with AOL, and has no problems. Is there something about AOL I should know about?
20 December 2005
Response:
Shouldn't be a problem. Perhaps AOL are caching the site and Active Guestbook thinks that some other domain is trying to add messages. You could turn the domain limiter off, but I guess that defeats the purpose. |

I tried to upgrade and i must have done something wrong. Now I can't even get to the guestbook on my site or the control panel. I followed the instructions and uploaded the cgi file to my site as text but could not get the script to run and now everything ids messed up. I would like to save the old messages.
15 December 2005
Response:
The path to your copy of perl is
#!/usr/local/bin/perl
rather than
#!/usr/bin/perl
which is the default. Any time you upgrade you need to change the first line of the script. |

Hi, I just downloaded your guestbook script, which by the way is absolutely fantastic!! However even though I read that messages are saved/stored in the "active_guestbook_files" directory, I can't seem to find this directory anywhere on my server.
Funny enough that the script does add messages to the guestbook!? Do you maybe know where messages are stored when there isn't an "active_guestbook_files" directory??
Thank you
14 December 2005
Response:
Trust me. It it there somewhere. Windows servers sometimes put it into the main html directory. |
