Hi. I've been searching for an ad-free, customisable Guestbook; your script fabulous. Thank you so much.
Two questions: Is there a way to put some space between "Viewing messages 1 to 10." and "Message 1"? They seem so crammed together.
Also how much of the Guestbook appearance can the css impact? Is there a way to use css to center an image and specify text alignment on the pages?
Again, great job. Thanks.
Wayne

Response:
In the Language Preferences Manager, you can put the html for a paragraph break or similar into the text that follows the number of messages. |

Only allow my domain to add messages? Can someone explain what this does? I thought they'd have to use my domain to add anyway.

Response:
A clever spammer can add messages without ever having to go near your guestbook. |

Hi - just got 8.3 on the server and I want to save my old colors as a skin and try yours for a while. So when I use the "Save as new skin" function, no matter what I try to enter as a name for the skin, it comes up "Please go back and enter a valid name".
A simple error, I'm sure! You do great work!

Response:
This was a bug in version 8.3. Fixed in 8.3a. |

Can I use multiple guestbooks on one site?
5 October 2005
Response:
You can use as many as you like. Just put each one in its own directory, e.g. cgi-bin/guestbook1, cgi-bin/guestbook2 etc. Some Windows servers can cause problems however. |

This is my third ASGB and I think it is great, hence me giving suggestions.
In the CP I can enter the name of the guestbook. This appears at the top of the page.
Would it be possible to have a line underneath this, in smaller font size, as an explanation of what the site is, or (in my case) warning away spammers?

Response:
If you want to play about with the titles etc, it is better to use the header html to add whatever you want and turn off the title. |

I have just installed and tested your "guestbook" script, and it seems to be quite comprehensive and works fine. However, I would like to allow guests and (and myself) to actually add HTML (with working links) within the messages. Is this possible? Thanks, James

There was one question on your site that referred to this question, but I did not understand the answer. The question is: Can one run more that one Guest Book at the same time. I would be using the product with Front Page 2003 on XP and publishing to 1and1.com with FP extensions enabled. I don't want to try the demo til I know the answer since I will need to have more than one book on the same site. Thanks in advance. cmc

Okay. When you install Active Guestbook, one of two things will happen. 1 - On most servers, the files created by the script (data, language info etc.) will be put into the SAME DIRECTORY that you have placed your guestbook script. So, for example, if you put guestbook.cgi into cgi-bin/guestbook/, the support files will be placed in cgi-bin/guestbook/active_guestbook_files and backups will be stored in cgi-bin/guestbook/active_guestbook_backups. 2 - On a few servers, mainly Windows, these two directories will in fact be placed in your ROOT directory which is usually you main docs directory for your html files. If your server places the support files as per 1 above, then you won't have any problems installing as many copies as you like as long as you put them in their own directories, e.g. guestbook1, guestbook2 etc. If your servers handles them as per 2 above, then you have a problem because each guestbook will try to access the same files and backups directories. |

First, a big thank oyu for making this script available. I'm using it to create a memorial site for a dear friend who just passed away.
One question: I'd like people to submit their email addresses (so we can notify them of the memorial), but I'd like to make it so that the email address will not be displayed in the postings. Not even in "munged" format. I've been looking for the line in the script that I need to edit out, but didn't find it. Can you help? Thank you.

Hi, I am using version 8.1q.
Is it possible to change one of the questions in the extra fields, and have it effective from there on, without effecting the anwers given before.
Otherwise, it looks very weird.
Waiting to hear from you.

Hello there. First and foremost thanks for an excellent guestbook!!!
Following a major hardware crash, I lost the "Control Panel" URL.

Many thanks and best regards Robin

Hi! Is there a way to set the time out for the script? We are using it for people writing short stories and they keep getting a time out when they click the Continue button after typing their story.

There is now a facility to change the timeout length in the Standard Preferences Manager. |

Greetings!
I have this guestbook (excellent script BTW) installed on a Godaddy account. Their CGI folder isn't called 'cgi-bin' ... it's simply 'cgi'. I couldn't get the guestbook to work and called Godaddy support. They told me to move the script from /cgi/guestbook folder to just the cgi folder, so the address would be: /cgi/guestbook.cgi This worked, however any links within the script are pointing to the 'cgi-bin' folder. I've managed to locate the password entry page and enter 'active', but after that, it trys to take me to cgi-bin/sbox/guestbook.cgi.
Any ideas on how I can fix this?
Thanks!
24 July 2005
Response:
You should edit the first couple of lines in the guestbook...
$use_absolute_reference = "no"; Change this to yes...
$urladdress = "http://www.domainhereifallelsefails.net/cgi-bin/gb/guestbook.cgi";
and put your address in the line above. |

I have just uploaded the newest guestbook version. The search function is not seeing anything that is entered into the Extra fields 1, 2, or 3. Is this a bug, or are those fields not searchable?

The fist time each day i try to open the guest book, i've got this message : "Can't open the mail program. Please check the mail path in the Control Panel." I just need to reload the page and then it works fine for 1 or 2 days. For me it is not a big deal but some visitors make simply go away… This said it is really a very cool and customable program. Thanks forward for your help
15 July 2005
Response:
Your sendmail program is not working, or the path to it is incorrect. Either switch off all email functions or fix the path. |

My friends try to sign my guestbook but they always say they come up with an error message saying the HTML is bad. What could cause this? Is it simply my own HTML header?
12 July 2005
Response:
This is because they are using a < or a > in the message. You can't do this. This is a route used by hackers to get at your guestbook and it is blocked. |
