Active Guestbook/Active Newsboard Help Page

This page should help you find your way through the many powerful features included in
Active Guestbook and Active Newsboard.

If you can't find what you are looking for here, visit our helpdesk.

Active Newsboard is a limited version of Active Guestbook, aimed at those who want to add a news page, weblog or a noticeboard. Active Newsboard gives you control over who can post items. Help for items in the Newsboard that are NOT in the Guestbook are given at the bottom of this page.

Once you have installed and set up the script, all we ask is that you please rate it at the CGI Resource Index.
Standard Preferences Manager

Presentation

Alignment (from version b2.0a)
Controls how the guestbook aligns in your page or within your frame.

Limit no of characters per word (from version 5.3, guestbook only)
PLEASE READ THIS, IT IS IMPORTANT, ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE USING A LANGUAGE WITH A NON-STANDARD ALPHABET.
This feature, which limits the maximum number of characters included in a single word posted by a guest, is included to stop spammers adding huge lines of characters with no spaces. This can mess up the layout of your guestbook.
However, there are two situations where you will NOT want to use this feature...
First, if you are using a language such as Chinese which, it appears, does not include spaces in the normal way, using the limit feature will mess things up.
Second, if you allow guests to include html in their messages, this feature is automatically ignored by the script if a message DOES actually contain some html, due to the long length of some strings in html code.

Show preview page when guest adds message (from version 5.3, guestbook only)
This controls whether or not a preview page and confirmation page appears after the guests adds a message.

Allow guests to leave private messages (from version b4.1)
Switches on and off the "Private Message" option which appears in the Add A Message page.

Title of your home page
The text you want to appear in the main link from the top of your guestbook. Please note that this does not have to be your home page but can be any page you wish visitors to your guestbook to return to once they have finished reading.

Your home page address
The URL of the page you named in the "Title of your home page" field above.

Margins (from version 4.2)
Set the side and top margin, in pixels.

Size of border around each message (from version b1.8)
You can control the thickness of the border around each message. Default is set to 0 which means no border. Any number can be used but once it gets much bigger than 3 or 4 it starts to look a bit strange.

Show horizontal line between messages (from version b1.8)
Controls whether or not a horizontal line appears between each guestbook message. You can also choose to put an image between messages (from version b3.1). See the Images/titles section below.

Show links to home page (from version b1.7)
If you are using the guestbook within a frame, you may not need a link to your home page if you have a menu in another frame.

Frame target for home page address (from version b1.7)
If you are using the guestbook within a frame, and DO want to have a home page link, you can put the target name here. Leave this empty if not using frames.

Font face and Font size
The face and size of the main font you wish to use. Please note that, for your guestbook to look the way you want it to across a wide range of browsers, the font you choose must be one that is available on the vast majority of users' computers. There is no point in choosing a fancy font if most people will not have it installed. It is probably best to stick to something straightforward like Arial.

Board width
The width in pixels (or in percentage [from version b3.2]) that the messages in your guestbook will be.

Number of messages per page
The maximum number of messages that will appear on each page of your guestbook.

Width of the fields in the Add a Message page (from version b3.0)
Allows you to set the width of the fields in the Add a Message page. The default is 40.

Brackets used in menus (from version b3.3)
Allows you to choose which type of brackets (if any) you want to use in the guestbook menus.

Maximum number of words in a message
Here you can set the maximum number of words visitors can include in their messages. This can help stop folk clogging up your guestbook with massive amounts of text.

Maximum number of characters in a message (from version b3.8)
Here you can set the maximum number of characters visitors can include in their messages. This helps stop spamming.

Email link display (from version 5.1)
Gives you control over whether or not a guest's email address is displayed, what format is used (your own text symbol, the address itself or an image) and whether or not the address in munged (garbled so that bots can't pick the addresses up from your site and spam your visitors).

Web link display (from version 5.1)
Gives you control over whether or not a guest's web address is displayed and what format is used (your own text symbol, the address itself or an image).

Order of messages
Sort messages by date, reverse date and (from version 4.2) alphabetically by message or name, or randomly.

Display total number of messages
Allows you to control whether or not your guestbook tell your visitors the total number of messages that have been left.

Text for "comment" title
Allows you to change the title that appears on messages when you add a comment.

Style/CSS

Use Style/CSS? (from version b2.0)
Allows you to use cascading style sheet code.

Style code (from version b2.0)
Type your css code here.

Email info

Path to your sendmail programme
In most cases, the default value of /usr/lib/sendmail should be fine. If you have problems with any of the email functions, please check with your web provider.

Your email address
The email address to which you want notification sent of newly added messages (if you have this facility switched on - see below). This will also appear as the return address on emails sent to visitors who have left messages (once again, if you have this facility switched on).

Send you email notification of new messages?
Allows you to control whether or not you receive notification when someone adds a new message.

Send guest a thank you message?
Allows you to control whether or not visitors receive a "thank you" email when they have added a new message.

Subject to be shown in your thank you message
The text that will appear in the Subject line of "thank you" emails to visitors who have left messages.

Text of your thank you message
The text that will appear in the body of the "thank you" email to visitors who have left messages.

Include original guestbook message in thank you message?
You can control whether or not the "thank you" email to visitors who have left messages includes the original message they left on your guestbook.

Images/titles

Show Active Scripts header
You will most likely want to disable this. This controls whether or not the Active Scripts images appear at the top of your guestbook.

Use your own image at top of guestbook
You can control whether or not you want to use your own image/logo at the top of your guestbook. If you select Yes, then you need to include the URL of the image in the next field (see below).

Address of your image
If you chose to use your own image at the top of your guestbook, then you need to include the full address here. If you leave this blank, you will receive an error message at the top of your guestbook.

Use text title
As well as (or instead of) an image or logo at the top of your guestbook, you can chose to have a simple text title.

Title of your guestbook
If you chose to have a text title, type the text here.

Use your own background image
Instead of using a color for the background, you can chose whether or not to use your own image.

Background image behaviour (IE) (from version 5.9q)
Controls whether your background image scrolls or is fixed. Only seem to work with IE at the moment.

Address of your background image
If you chose to have your own background image, you must type the address of the image here.

Use your own image between messages (from version b3.1)
Instead of (or as well as) using a simple horizontal line between messages, you can have your own image.

Address of your image between messages (from version b3.1)
If you chose to have your own image between messages, you must type the address of the image here.

Use your own html header at top of guestbook?
You can choose whether or not you wish to add some of your own html to the top of your guestbook.

User header html
If you choose to use your own header html, please type it here.

Use your own html footer at bottom of guestbook?
You can choose whether or not you wish to add some of your own html to the bottom of your guestbook.

User footer html
If you choose to use your own footer html, please type it here.

Allow html in messages
You can choose whether or not to allow visitors to add their own html to a message. This is a BIG security hole so we suggest you leave it as it is.

Message control

Block multiple posts in same day by same IP?
If someone is regularly spamming your guestbook, you can limit them to one message per session. Please note, most people can get around this by hanging up and dialling in again, thus being allocated a different IP address. But it helps. We haven't yet added a facility to permanently block IPs because a lot of ISPs are now using transparent proxies which means that ALL of their customers have the same IP address. If many of you feel we should, then we will.

List any servers (from version 1.9) or IP addresses (or parts thereof) that you wish to block.
You can add full or part IP addresses here if you do not want customers from a particular ISP to be able to leave messages. You can see a visitor's IP address in the Message Manager. Use this carefully. If you use only the first two numbers of an IP address, then you are blocking a potentially large number of visitors. If a visitor from a blocked IP visits your site, they will not see the "Add a message" button.

List words you would rather your guest did not use in your guestbook.
You can add as many swear/abusive words as you like, separated by spaces. People often get around this by changing words slightly etc., but once again, it helps. (Note that from version b2.1, Active Guestbook detects a range of usual English swear words by default. These are stored in the script itself.)

Guestbook management

Approve messages before they are added? (from version b2.1)
Control whether you want to approve messages which guests have added before they actually appear in your guestbook. This is good for stopping abuse. You approve messages in the Message Manager in your Control Panel.

Maximum number of messages in entire guestbook
Once this maximum number has been reached, oldest messages will be automatically deleted during the next daily update (which happens the first time someone visits your guestbook each day). Please note that these messages can still be retrieved via the Trash Manager. All trashed messages remain in your trash until you manually wipe them or until they reach an age where they are automatically removed (see below).

Number of days until a message is automatically removed from guestbook.
The number of days after which a message is automatically sent to the trash. Set this to the number 0 to retain messages.

Number of days to complete wipe of messages following removal.
The number of days, from the date of deletion, after which a message is automatically removed from the trash. Set this to a high number to retain messages in the trash. Once a message has been deleted from the trash, you can not recover it.

No of days your daily automatic backups are retained
Active Guestbook runs a backup (saved on the server) every time someone adds a new message. The final backup of the day is retained on the server for the number of days you put in this field. You can view/restore any backed up version of your data at any time by using the Backup Manager.

Backup email

Send regular email backup to admin?
Active Guestbook can automatically send you data backups via email. You must have a valid email address in the "Your email address" field (see above).

Frequency of regular email of backup to admin
This powerful feature allows you to choose how often you receive your backups via email. If you have a very busy guestbook, you may want to set this to "daily". If you get messages less regularly, you can choose to receive backups weekly or monthly. Please note, for this facility to work, your guestbook must be visited (though not necessarily added to) at least once on the day you wish to receive your email. If no one visits on your chosen day, Active Guestbook will automatically email you the next time anyone visits, no matter when.

Color Preferences Manager

This page allows you to change the color settings in your guestbook.

Please note that the colors of links etc can be overridden by the Style/CSS settings in the Standard Preferences Manager. Remember to turn Style/CSS settings OFF to change this.

Language Preferences Manager (from version 2.0)

You can edit the text that appears to the visitor throughout the different parts of the guestbook. You can either choose to simply edit the text to more closely reflect your use of the guestbook, or you can use this section to present the guestbook in another language.

Includes the facility to change the names of weekdays and months.

Date Format Manager (from version 5.0)

You can set the format of the date to anything you like. Please note that, if you edit the date of a message that a guest has left (using the Message Manager), the date format for that message will not respond to changes in the Date Format Manager. Also, dates of messages left in guestbook versions prior to version 5.0 will not respond to changes in the Date Format Manager if you upgrade to version 5.0 or greater.

Message Manager
Delete this message
Sends the message to the trash. You can undelete the message using the Trash Manager. The message will automatically be erased from the trash after a number of days which you can control in the Guestbook Management section of the Standard Preferences Manager.

Add a comment
You can add a comment to any message. This option only appears for messages to which you have not yet added comments.

APPROVE THIS MESSAGE (from version b2.1)
If a message is waiting your approval (because you have enabled "Approve messages before they are added" in the Standard Preferences Manager), you will have that option here.

Edit this message
Allows you to edit any message.

Trash Manager
Undelete this entry
Restores a deleted message back to the main guestbook.

Permanently wipe this entry
Completely erases a deleted message. (You may be still able to recover the message via the Backup Manager).

Backup Manager
Allows you to view and/or restore any backups you have. Backups are done automatically, each day that a new message is added to your guestbook. If several messages are added on the same day, the final backup is kept. The number of days that backups are kept is controlled via the Guestbook Management section of the Standard Preferences Manager.

Once you have restored a backup, you can undo the process which will return you to the version you had prior to backup restoration.

Password Manager
Allows you to change your Control Panel password. Please note that passwords are case-sensitive

Active Newsboard

In the Standard Preferences section of the Control Panel, you can choose the level of access you wish to give to visitors to your site.
- Public means that everyone can add an item
- Restricted means that only those with a password can add
- Private means that only you can add.

If access is set to Private, then an option will appear in the Control Panel allowing you to add an item. The facility to add messages in the main guestbook will not be available to your visitors.
If access is set to Restricted, then a facility to set the password for those whom you DO want to be able to add items will also appear in the Standard Preferences.
