Using the Active PowerBook Field Editor
Main Help Page
Select "Field Editor/Message Layout Manager" from the Control Panel and click Go. This takes you to the Message Layout Manager. Each field in the Message Layout Manager has a link entitled "Editor". Click this link to go to the Field Editor for the selected field.
The options available to you in the Field Editor depend on which Field Type you choose. It is important that you take the time to get the settings correct for each field. This will save a lot of trouble later.
Field Types
- Text
This creates a field that allows a single line of text to be added in the Add A Message page. You can add almost anything to a text field, including email addresses and web address, but they will all be treated as ordinary text.
- Email
This creates a field that allows an email address to be added in the Add A Message page. When a guest enters an email address in an Email field, Active PowerBook will check that the syntax is correct before allowing the message to be added. Active PowerBook does not check to see if the actual address exists, only if it looks like an email address.
- URL
This creates a field that allows a web address to be added. It doesnt matter whether or not the "http://" bit is entered by your guests. Active PowerBook should be able to handle entries either way.
- Textarea
This creates a text box in the Add A Message page into which a guest can add multi-line entries.
- Image
This creates a field in the Add A Message page that allows guests to upload an image. (Please dont confuse this with the File field type below.) If a guest uploads an image and the field is set to Public in the Page Layout Manager, the image will appear in the message. (NB Please ensure that you set the type(s) of image allowed.)
- File
This creates a field in the Add A Message page which that allows guests to upload a file. If a guest uploads a file and the field I set to Public in the Page Layout Manager, a link to the file will appear in the message. IMPORTANT Be careful as to which type of files you allow guests to upload. It might be best to refrain from files that might contain viruses, especially exe, bat and scr files.
- Check
This creates a checkbox in the Add A Message page.
- Select
This creates a dropdown list of options in the Add A Message page.
- Radio
This creates list of radio button options in the Add A Message page.
- Date
This creates a date field in each message.

(all field types except Date) Edit the name of the field.

- Active?
(all field types) This toggles the field between active/inactive. This is the same as the Active/Inactive link in the Page Layout Manager.
- Field Width
(text, email, url) This sets the length of the input box for the current field in the Add A Message page.

(textarea only) Sets the number of columns the textarea box has in the Add A Message page.

(textarea only) Sets the number of rows the textarea box has in the Add A Message page.

(text, email, url) Sets the maximum number of characters that can be entered into the field in the Add A Message page. TIP The maximum number of characters/words that appear in your TEXTAREA fields are set in the Standard Preferences Manager.
- Keep Private
(all field types except Date) Allows guests to enter data into a field but ensures that it is not displayed in the main PowerBook page. Private fields can be viewed in the Message Manager.
- Allowed types
(file, image) Controls the type of file or image that guests can upload. Enter a list of allowed tags separated by spaces. E.g. "doc xls mdb". If you leave the "Allowed types" field empty, Active PowerBook assumes that you allow jpg and gif uploads if the field type is "Image", and doc and xls uploads if the field type is "File".
- Use hyperlink?
(email, url) If this box is checked, the email address or url will appear in the message as a hyperlink. Otherwise, the email address or url will just appear as ordinary text.
- Hyperlink format
(email, url) Chose how the hyperlink will appear:
- address
appears as the actual url/email address entered by the guest
- text
appears as fixed text, e.g. "web" or "email address"; (see Hyperlink Text below)
- image
appears as a fixed image (see Hyperlink Image below)
- alternative field
appears as the contents of another field within the message. E.g. the guest may have uploaded an image which you want to use as a link to their website. You can set the image field itself to Private, and then use the image field as a hyperlink to the website/email address.
- Hyperlink text
(email, url) Enter the text you want to appear as the hyperlink if you have chosen "text" as your hyperlink format above.
- Hyperlink image
(email, url) Enter the url of the image you want to appear as the hyperlink if you have chosen "image" as your hyperlink above.
- Munged?
(email only) This plays about with your guests email addresses so that remote bots trawling the web for email addresses to spam cant get at your guests. The @ symbol is replace by "AT" and the dots in the address are replaced by the word "DOT".
- Send response/thank you message?
(email only) Control whether or not a response gets sent to the email address entered into this field.

- Follows previous field (all field types) Sets whether the current field appears vertically or horizontally after the previous field.
- Text/html before (Main page)
(all field types) Inserts text/html before the contents of the field appear in messages. This is useful if you want to label a field with something else other than the name of the field. For example, if the field is called "Your location" in the Add A Message page, you can enter something like "Hometown" here and this will appear before the location details on the main page rather than the name of the field.
- Text/html after (Main page)
(all field types) Similar to "Text/html before (Main page)" above except that it allows you to add text/html after the data.
- Use field title in Add page
works along with
- Text before (Add/Respond page)
(all field types except "date") If you leave the "Text before (Add/Respond page)" box empty, then fields in the Add A Message page with just us the title of the field as a label (e.g. Email address, Gender etc.). If you enter text into this box, then this will appear instead of the field name. If you tick "Use field title in Add page", any text in the "Text before (Add/Respond page)" box will be ignored. Note, ticking the "Use field title in Add page" box does the same thing as having nothing in the "Text before (Add/Respond page) box. It just allows you to keep any text you may have entered in case you need to use it again.
